Dog and Puppy Resources

Where to Adopt a Dogs, Puppies, and More

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a puppy from a pet store! More on this later, but the short version is the dog production industry (puppy mills -> pet stores) are indirectly responsible for millions of healthy doggies being put to death EVERY YEAR because they don’t have homes. Do your part, RESCURE a doggie who needs a home – start with your local Humane Society or find a shelter in your area.

PetFinder - Find thousdans of animals that need homes today – in your area!

“Petfinder is an on-line, searchable database of animals that need homes. It is also a directory of over 10,000 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the USA, Canada and Mexico. Organizations maintain their own home pages and available pet database.”

Operation Kindness - North Texas’s oldest and largest nonprofit no-kill animal welfare organization that cares for homeless cat and dogs. This is also one of our favorite charities to support.

The Humane Society of the United States – “the nation’s largest and most effective animal protection organization—backed by 10 million Americans, or one in every 30. Established in 1954, The HSUS seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals—a world that will also benefit people. We are America’s mainstream force against cruelty, exploitation and neglect, as well as the most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond.”

“We work to reduce suffering and to create meaningful social change for animals by advocating for sensible public policies, investigating cruelty and working to enforce existing laws, educating the public about animal issues, joining with corporations on behalf of animal-friendly policies, and conducting hands-on programs that make ours a more humane world. We are the leaddisaster relief agency for animals, and we provide direct care for thousands of animals at our sanctuaries and rescue facilities, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and mobile veterinary clinics.”

Dog Charities

When we asked our (previous) vet what doggie charities they recommended, they gave us a list of 5 people charities that happened to also include animals. Somehow that really missed the point. So, here’s a list of Doggie charities for you to choose from.

Help Doggies – “Helping Man Become Dog’s Best Friend”

OK, we’re biased here because this is the doggie charity we founded. :-)

The term encompasses both feral and pet varieties and is also sometimes used to describe wild canids of other subspecies or species. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history, as well as being a food source in some cultures.
